The awarding of the FIFA World Cup to Brazil came along with the promise of social and economic benefits for the country. In contrary to that, Brazil finds itself in a discussion of the real consequences of the mega-event for society.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation invited journalists and experts to find answers on this question. Our web-dossier “World Cup for whom and for what?” comprises reports, articles, maps, photos and videos that document that demonstrate how the Brazilian government, the FIFA and the associated companies mercantalize public space, justified by an exemption clause – the so called ‘legado da Copa’ – World Cup´s legacy .

The dossier shows that we have the most expensive World Cup of all time, with 85% of the expenses covered by public funds. Apart from that the mega-event significantly violates the right to housing in Brazil. More than 200.000 people were or will be evicted in order to make way for urban mobility and infrastructure projects. Along with that, the dossier takes a closer look at the criminalization of social-oppositional movements and the ongoing militarization of the state.

Our work addresses an international audience and is available in Portuguese, English and German.
