The project “What is to be done? Lebanon’s War-loaded Memory” is composed of seven specialized workshops and multiple cultural events that are taking place in Beirut and other areas and are open to the public.

The project aims at increasing the public’s awareness as well as the capacity and expertise of local NGOs and active individuals working in the area of memory, truth seeking and the promotion of justice. The idea is to produce strategies and tools for implementing various approaches which are of real value and relevance to the Lebanese context. The project also attempts at coordinating and harmonizing activities and various approaches in this field carried out by civil society actors.

In the series of workshops, representatives of local NGOs, academics, journalists, artists, students, religious authorities, former members of militias, and representatives of the Lebanese army come together to discuss the following issues: truth seeking and truth commissions; the kidnapped and disappeared; prosecutions and international criminal law; forensics and mass graves; archiving and documentation techniques; reparations; memorials and commemoration. International experts and activists from countries such as South Africa, Iraq, Morocco, and Bosnia are invited to provide input that can be used by local NGOs to advance this cause in Lebanon.
