One year passed since the blast in the port that devastated a big part of Beirut, killed, injured and destroyed so many lives. One year and no official investigation. One year and no accountability. One year and no justice.

We as HBS Beirut office mark this anniversary by publishing articles, interviews and videos produced and written by our partners and us. Our aim is to document what happened on that terrible day, and to support the calls for justice for the victims, their families and all people in Beirut that lived this horrible day.

There is a nightmare unfolding in Lebanon. The currency losing value at a staggering speed while thousands of people are emigrating. While this is happening, there are no solutions in sight. The people living through this crisis in Lebanon deserve justice and there should be accountability for those in charge of creating this economic collapse.

LEBANON’S DESCENT INTO THE ABYSS

The biggest uprising in the country’s history just two years back, just one year ago one of the largest explosions in the twenty-first century, a regime obstructing any investigation into the root causes of the explosion, a global pandemic, and now one of the worst socio-economic crises in the world. In the last two years, Lebanon has been transformed beyond recognition, has unraveled beyond limits.

One Year On – and Still No Answers

The first anniversary of the death of a family member or of a natural disaster is always a heavy time. Memories and feelings will re-surface – things that had been pushed aside by everyday activities and in order to get on with one‛s life. Now, a few days before the first anniversary of the explosion that destroyed the port of Beirut on 4 August 2020, many photos and videos are being shared on social media, and Lebanese TV is, once again, reporting on the catastrophe that happened that day. One TV station even produced a video that, using computer animation, showed victims of the explosion talking about that day – something that caused a major indignation.

International election observation missions must execute their work in line with a country’s constitutional provisions and electoral laws, and within international and regional democratic and human rights instruments, making the intervention necessary, especially in cases where people are victimized and living under dire conditions due to state failure, and where the course of electoral process seems to be at risk.
